The LSU School of Social Work is dedicated to advancing the holistic health and well-being of individuals, families, organizations, and communities through excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement. The school is committed to preparing highly skilled professionals and generating scholarship with meaningful real-world impact.
The school offers three social work degree programs (BSW, MSW, and PhD) and a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Science, with total enrollment exceeding 1,400 students.
Award-winning faculty conduct impactful research addressing the many dimensions of holistic health. Examples include work to strengthen dementia-capable care in rural and underserved communities, research on mental health and health-risk behaviors among marginalized populations, and community-engaged initiatives that enhance coping skills and develop disaster-responsive energy resilience hubs.
Faculty are deeply committed to teaching excellence and employ evidence-informed, high-impact pedagogical practices, including service-learning and communication-intensive courses, to prepare students for effective professional practice.
The impact of the school’s students is reflected in the prestigious national awards they have received from the American Association of University Women, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work, and the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work. In addition to these recognitions, students generate substantial community benefit through required field practica and internships, contributing more than 615,000 hours of service annually.
The school also strengthens the professional social work community through a robust continuing education program, offering 43 events to more than 2,500 attendees in the past year.
