Since its inception, the Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering has set a standard for outstanding undergraduate education, with a reputation for practical, hands-on training and history of developing engineers who are innovative and ready for practice.
Undergraduate students are exposed to a traditional core curriculum that includes five hands-on laboratory courses, training in advanced computer simulation, along with electives on modern topics such as natural gas engineering, geothermal energy, and deepwater production. LSU engineers make an average of $86,000 a year.
Our faculty work in several areas: reservoir engineering and enhanced oil recovery, drilling engineering and well integrity, production optimization and multiphase flow and transport, sensing technologies and data analytics, and energy transition and sustainability.
We are the only department in the country that operates six wells, two dedicated to research, through our LSU Petroleum Engineering Research, Training & Testing (PERTT) Lab. A third well dedicated to CO2 research is targeted for drilling in 2026. The PERTT lab has evolved into a multi-million-dollar hub of innovation. Global energy leaders — at ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Chevron, and others — use this one-of-a-kind facility to field-test and refine new ideas.
